Sertraline (Zoloft)

Long-term management of these conditions with sertraline is often preferred over faster-acting benzodiazepines such as Alprazolam (Xanax), which can cause cognitive impairment, dependency, abuse, and severe withdrawals. Sertraline is taken once daily with food and water, ideally right after breakfast. Your dose should be gradually increased, and the maximum benefit may take 4 to 6 weeks to take effect. Common side effects can include upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, dizziness, and insomnia. Please contact your doctor right away if you experience worse depression symptoms, sudden mood changes, or suicidal thoughts while taking sertraline.  Avoid alcohol while taking this medication because alcohol is a powerful depressant that can decrease the benefit of sertraline. Make sure to also inform your doctor and/or pharmacist of all other medications (including over-the-counter drugs and supplements) you are taking in order to prevent drug interactions.
